A long time ago in a small village near the beach in west Sumatra , there lived a woman and her son, Malin Kundang. MalinKundang’s father had died when he was a baby, so he had to live hard with his mother. Malin Kundang was healthy, diligent and strong boy. He usually went to the beach to catch fish and brought it to his mother or sold it in town. One day when Malin Kundang was fishing as usual, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. Dia terlihat sangat tampan, dan istrinya juga sangat rupawan,” ucap tetangganya. Ibu Malin tak percaya. Matanya berkaca-kaca. Sungguh, ia sangat merindukan anaknya selama beberapa tahun ini. Maka ia pun segera berlari menuju dermaga. Benar saja, di sana terlihat Malin dengan istrinya yang sangat rupawan. “Malin, kau pulang, Nak,” seru ibunya. Malin mengenali ibunya. Namun, ia malu mengakui orangtua yang berpakaian sangat lusuh itu. Bagaimana ia akan menjelaskan kepada istrinya tentang semua ini? “Kau bilang ibumu sudah meninggal. Apa benar orangtua ini adalah ibumu?” tanya istri Malin, bingung. “Dia bukan ibuku, dia pengemis yang mengaku-ngaku sebagai ibuku.” seru Malin. Sungguh sakit hati Ibunya mendengar perkataan Malin.
